It was the second day of the Gillette cup qualifiers. The boys were still buzzing after our win against stream the previous day. It was a niggly toss to lose and we were sent in to bat by the Town team. The innings didn’t get off to the greatest of starts with Nikunj getting a very good nurrie 1st ball and being sent back to the shed with the team 0/1 after only one ball. Rachin joined the crease with Logan and these two battled away for a few overs. Come the first drinks break and the score was not look all that pleasing at 40/4 at drinks. Runs were chipped in from Tyler, Rachin and I throughout the second third with us all scoring 18 each. Matthew and Joe rounding off the innings well with footy scoring a lengthy 21 accompanied by Matt who score a season high 5 only to be sold down the river by Joey and run-out with the boys reaching an under par 123 with 5 overs left in the innings.
Defending only 123 the boys got the innings off to a great start with rachy picking up their opener only 4th ball. We fought well and restricted the Town team to only 34 for 2 at drinks. Some excellent bowling from Jesse who took 3 wickets in the end, tyler who ended with two and rachin also with 3, through the middle session saw the town team score only 34 runs in the second set of 17 overs. Two balls after drinks break a stroke of luck occured as Jess bowled two of the biggest buffet balls I’ve ever seen to dismiss their number five and opener to open up an end and give the boys a fighting chance. With their danger man out, the match came down to the last over. Jesse was given the ball with town needing only three off the last over. After a single and 3 dots the Town batsmen decided to risk it and take a suicidal runs as the batsmen blocked and ran. Jesse collected the ball and threw down the stumps to win the match and give us a massive chance of making the final on the 4th of April.
Special thanks to all the supporters who came down and cheered the boys on. Look forward to seeing some support tomorrow for the boys as we take on HVHS at Petone Rec at 11.00 sharp.
