In the schoolboy nationals at Lincoln near Christchurch, Hutt International Boys’ School went ever so close to keeping their unbeaten record in suffering a tense first loss of the week.

HIBS were skittled for 172 by Westlake Boys’, with Bradley Johns topscoring with 41, then gave it a good crack by snaring eight wickets before Westlake nudged to victory with four balls to spare. After Ben Sears removed both openers, captain Troy Johnson ripped through the lower order with 4-37 off his 10 overs. Westlake skipper William O’Donnell (46 not out) batted through from No 4 to steer a shaky chase home.

It left a four-way tie on points at the top of the ladder after three rounds. HIBS, Westlake, Christchurch Boys’ and Hamilton Boys’ each have two wins, with HIBS facing Hamilton Boys’ in their next match on Thursday.
