Hutt International Boys’ School have exacted revenge for their two-run 2014 loss to Christchurch Boys’ High School with a thrilling Super Over win.

HIBS chose to bat first in the national first XI cup match at Bert Sutcliffe Oval on Tuesday, making 188-9 off their 50 overs thanks to patient knocks from Rachin Ravindra (32 off 72), Akshar Patel (35 off 62) and Bradley Johns (31 off 48).

CBHS appeared to be cruising at 152-5 in the 36th over, only to lose four wickets for 12 runs in the space of six overs thanks to a good spell from Tyler Simpson (3-30).

But they weren’t done there, Fraser Sheat (30 off 52) batted with number 11 Fergus Fairburn (three off 27) to take them to the last over needing just two runs.

Left arm medium pacer Caleb Hewson bowled his first ball of the tournament for a wide, bringing the scores level, before skittling Fairburn three balls later to force the Super Over.

HIBS strike bowler Ben Sears, who was kept quiet with 1-41 in the CBHS innings, then exploded into life, smashing the stumps of the CBHS batsmen with his first two balls (only two wickets are allowed in a Super Over).

It left skipper Troy Johnson the simple task of scoring one run to win – he hit a four to send HIBS to the top of the standings with two wins from two.

They are there thanks to Hamilton Boys’ High’s four-wicket win over first-day winners Palmerston North Boys’ High on Tuesday. Westlake Boys’ High beat Otago Boys’ High in the other game.

HIBS face a big game against Westlake on Wednesday –  a win would inch them closer to the national title.
