HIBS 1ST XI Cricket Match Report Prem 1 Final VS WC
The day started with Slee winning the toss and putting WC out to bat first on a hard but patchy wicket. Weather was perfect for the ball to start hooping and unfortunately Macca couldn’t control the beast. Few overs into the game and first wicket fell getting one of the openers out for 3 runs. Boys grafted for 24 overs to get rid of batsmen 2 & 3 until finally Vishvaka fell. Paired with great death bowling and stellar fielding (notice to the amazing direct hit from Webster to dismiss Tim Campbell) from the boys we restricted WC to 250/8, which may seem like a lot, but nothing compared to what they were projected for. Noticeable performances: N. Patel 3-29, C.Wilson 2-52, L.Bailey 1-44.
The second innings started as the openers, Fezz and I went out. The considerable amount of chat seemed to get to Fezz as he pulled one straight back to the bowler and the boys were 10/1. We were cruising and ready to take off when I hit a full toss straight down the throat of long off. At 50/2 there was still a long way to go and the rightly so the middle order came in clutch and the engine room finally started working. Wilson, Webb and Gray batted around Slee for three key partnerships during our middle overs worth 24, 67 and 60 respectively. With Slee out and the boys at 214/6, Cole “Jammy” Kennedy and Lachie Bailey stepped up and upheld a partnership needing 7 runs off 6 balls thanks to Cole’s excellently placed edges running for two fours from the previous over. Kennedy hit a 4 off the first ball and after a single the equation was 2 to win off 4 deliveries. With the field all in, Lachie the young gun decided to chip one over third man for 4 and the boys’ coming home with Prem 1 for 253/5 after 49.4 overs. Noticeable performances: C.Wilson 25, C.Webster 35, K.Downy.Gray 16, C.Kennedy 29 and finally Logan Slee with a skippers knock in his final game for HIBS of 86.
The boys had a rough season expecting to only win a few games though going as far to nearly beating this same side during the season. Our only other freak loss to WC 2nd XI (who finished bottom table). Special thanks to all the supporters and parents who are involved with the side and come to watch the game, whether it was only the final or every single game, it really does help the boys. But mostly a big thank you to Mark Borthwick who has once again led a HIBS side to a Prem 1 title. We bid farewell to Year 13’s Logan Slee and Mac Kennerley as they leave the side (mentions to Jesse Tashkoff as well, as he played the first half of the year). The boys have played out of their skin once again striving to make our brother up there proud 💛. Two big Prem 1 titles in one year, how good.
